Soul Midwife end of life companion

What is a Soul Midwife?

Soul Midwives are non-denominational, multi-faith (or no-faith) practitioners who offer non-medical, holistic support for anyone facing end-of-life, through the dying process and after the last breath. At the simplest level, Soul Midwives can visit, deeply listen and be there to talk when needed, holding a caring, supportive, safe, non-judgemental confidential space.  We can give practical planning advice early whether that be advance care planning or funeral preparation through to vigiling and after death care. We also support the immediate family and friends also in anyway possible to help.

Some reasons to seek a Soul Midwife

  • An independant end of life companion
  • You or your loved one feel unsure about approaching end of life and would like some compassionate experienced support.
  • Someone to lean on for non-medical holistic support, not wanting to feel alone through this journey. That could be talking to holistic therapy support.
  • Someone to take you through what planning is useful to put in place for peace of mind.
  • Need support and advice on funeral arrangements.
  • Spiritual support
  • Discuss options available at bedtime vigiling stage.
  • Discuss options available after last breath.

The 12 Principles of Soul Midwifery

  • To work as non-medical holistic companions who guide and support a dying person in order to facilitate a gentle and tranquil death.
  • To support and recognise the individual needs of the dying person and ensure that they feel loved and supported.
  • To create and hold a sacred and healing space for the dying person (whether in a hospital, a hospice or at home).
  • To respect and honour a dying person’s religious/spiritual or atheist/agnostic beliefs and practices.
  • To work as non-denominational, multi-faith practitioners who honour the dying person’s beliefs about life, death or the afterlife.
  • To listen, provide gentle therapeutic techniques, and ensure compassionate care at all times.
  • To ‘serve’ our friend; not aim to ‘fix’ or ‘rescue’.
  • To give healing, using sound, touch, colour, scented oils or other gentle techniques to alleviate pain and anxiety.
  • To keep a loving vigil.
  • To work holistically with the spirit and soul of our friends at all levels and stages of transition.
  • To support families and their loved ones, giving loving care with a human touch.
  • To provide comfort, continuous support and reassurance in helping a dying person to experience the death he or she wants.

voluntary companionship work

End of Life Voluntary work

Alongside qualifying as a Soul Midwife End of Life Companion, I have been volunteering with both Hospices based in Edinburgh to continue learning from these incredible people dealing with a life limiting illness.

Pushing up the Daisies

I'm an active member of the Daisy chain with the Scotland-wide Charity Pushing up The Daisies.  We believe that spending time with someone after their last breath can be an invaluable help with the grieving process. We can provide information about options, legalities and practicalities in the days after death so people have the appropriate information to make their own decisions well in advance of death.

Compassionate Neighbour

I've been a Compassionate Neighbour with St. Columba's Hospice in Edinburgh for almost a year now. I am matched with people living with an end-of-life diagnosis and offer my time, kindness and company each week. It's an absolute privilege.

Companion service

In April this year, I joined Marie Curie's Voluntary Companion Service in Edinburgh. Along similar lines to St. Columba's, I am matched with people living with an end-of-life illness and visit them each week.
